Real Madrid Could Host Liverpool in the Champions League Due to Competition Rules
Liverpool will not be able to host Real Madrid at Anfield during the league phase of the Champions League this season, due to competition rules preventing the same fixture from being played at one team’s stadium for three consecutive seasons at this stage.
Liverpool hosted Real Madrid at Anfield in each of the previous two seasons, meaning the English club would be unable to welcome the Spanish giants at home for a third consecutive campaign if the draw pairs the two sides again.
Under the competition regulations, Real Madrid would be allowed to host Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabéu this season, as the Spanish club has not hosted the same fixture for three consecutive seasons during the league phase.
Therefore, if Real Madrid and Liverpool are drawn against each other again in the Champions League league phase, the match would be played at the Spanish club’s home ground, while Liverpool would not be permitted to host Real Madrid at Anfield.
The situation stems from the Champions League’s new regulations, which place restrictions on repeatedly hosting the same fixture at a team’s home stadium during the league phase.
