Chelsea are facing a crucial decision over the future of Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández, with the summer transfer window approaching its closing stages and Manchester City reportedly prepared to meet the London club’s financial demands for the player.
According to CaughtOffside, Manchester City are ready to offer up to £120 million, the valuation set by Chelsea for Fernández, as the Premier League champions look to accelerate negotiations before the transfer window closes.
Chelsea have not ruled out selling the 25-year-old midfielder if their financial demands are met, despite Fernández’s importance to the team. Such a deal could provide the club with significant financial flexibility to strengthen other areas of the squad.
Manchester City view Fernández as one of their main targets for reinforcing the midfield, particularly after the departure of several players in that position. The club have already strengthened the area by signing Elliot Anderson and are also close to completing a deal for Moroccan midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi.
The Guardian previously reported that Manchester City had reached an agreement with Lille for Bouaddi in a deal that could be worth up to €100 million, following Anderson’s arrival. However, Fernández remains among the options being considered by the English club to further strengthen their midfield.
Fernández’s potential move to Manchester City would represent a significant dilemma for Chelsea, as his departure to a direct Premier League rival would weaken the Blues while simultaneously strengthening one of their main competitors.
On the other hand, selling Fernández for £120 million could give Chelsea considerable financial flexibility to reinvest in new signings, while also generating a substantial return compared with the amount the club paid Benfica for his services in 2023.
The final decision is expected to depend largely on Xabi Alonso’s long-term plans for Fernández and whether the Argentine midfielder remains a key part of Chelsea’s project, with the pressure increasing as the transfer deadline approaches.
