Chelsea continues its moves to strengthen the team's midfield, after placing Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum among its options to sign him on a free transfer, following the failure of its last attempt to sign Senegalese Lamine Camara from Monaco.
According to journalist Santi Aouna, Chelsea has already started opening communication channels with Wijnaldum in the past few hours, given the team's need to reinforce the midfield after Enzo Fernandez's departure to Manchester City.
Chelsea has the opportunity to sign the Dutch player despite the closure of the summer transfer window, after Wijnaldum became a free agent following the end of his contract with Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, which allows him to move to any team without being bound by the transfer market closing date.
Chelsea's interest in Wijnaldum came after the failure of the Lamine Camara deal at the last minute, as Monaco withdrew from completing the player's transfer to the London team, and the deal stopped after Chelsea had counted on it to cover Enzo Fernandez's departure.
The London club hopes to finalize a new midfield option in the coming period, and Wijnaldum's experience may make him one of the proposed solutions to compensate for the void left by Enzo's departure, pending the outcome of contacts between the two parties.
