Official announcement of the start date of the Spanish League

The date for the start of the Spanish League competitions for the 2026-2027 season has officially been set, after the issuance of the arbitration decision that ended the dispute between the Spanish League and the Spanish Football Players Association regarding the start date of the new season.

According to what was reported by the Spanish News Agency, the arbitrator approved the proposal submitted by the League Association, to approve the start of the competition during the weekend of next August 15 and 16, rejecting the request submitted by the Players Association to postpone the kick-off to August 23.

The Players Association objected based on the effects related to the 2026 World Cup, as it considered that the international players who will participate in the tournament will not receive a sufficient rest or preparation period before returning to local competitions.

In the same context, the arbitration decision also supported the proposal regarding the schedule of the second-tier competitions, as it was decided to hold the final round of the tournament on June 6, with the play-off matches qualifying for promotion to the first division being played during the period extending from June 9 to 20.

The Players Association expressed its dissatisfaction with the decision, stressing that the approved date may affect the physical readiness of some players after a long season that includes the World Cup, considering that economic and commercial considerations received greater priority than aspects related to the players’ health and well-being.

On the other hand, the Spanish League stressed that the approved schedule takes into account the exceptional circumstances imposed by the World Cup, explaining that it includes flexible solutions, among them. The possibility of postponing the first round matches for some clubs that include a large number of players participating in the advanced stages of the World Cup.

The arbitration decision considered that the proposals submitted by the League Association are in line with the applicable legal and regulatory frameworks, and provide the necessary balance to ensure the start of the new season and the regularity of the competition without delay, despite the challenges associated with the crowded international calendar.
